Honolulu's KINGS OF SPADE live at Mulligan's (Maui) with Rabbitt and the Propers

KINGS OF SPADE LIVE @ MULLIGAN'S (MAUI)

w/RABBITT & THE PROPERS

KINGS OF SPADE (from Honolulu) dish out a raw and grungey blend of urban funk, dirty blues, deep soul and rock.   Proud of not being boxed in a specific genre, the KINGS can remind you of a classic fist-pumping rock band in one number, take you for a dance-pop ride in the next, and then charge straight into an old smokey blues riff.  Their energetic live show has landed them gigs at LA's House of Blues, The Avalon, and The Viper Room, as well opening for world-famous acts like Bon Jovi, Daughtry, and most recently, the Deftones.  The very last time they played in Maui was to a sold-out crowd at Charley's.

Win $500 for YOUR school from Queen Kaahumanu Center

WIN $500 FOR YOUR SCHOOL

Usually, cash flows toward a mall--not away from it. But the QKC is cool and is giving you a chance to win $500 for your school.

Visit the mall's Facebook page now through August 31 to vote for your school in their "Loud & Proud" contest. The winning school will be announced on their page on September 1.

Just to check it out, I took the poll (forsaking my alma mater, King K, I voted for Pomaikai, where my mom teaches). There are 11 schools to choose from: Iao Intermediate, Kahului Baptist Preschool, Kahului Elementary; King Kekaulike High School; Lihikai Elementary; Maui High School; Maui Waena Intermediate; Paia Elementary, Pomaikai Elementary, Pukalani Elementary, and Sacred Hearts School.

As of this post, Pukalani Elementary is in the lead with 70 percent of the vote (71 votes).

Every Saturday in September, check out Kimo Nevius at Paia's Moana Bakery & Cafe (7-9pm)

EVERY SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER, CHECK OUT KIMO NEVIUS AT PAIA'S MOANA BAKERY & CAFE (7-9PM)

For four Saturdays in September, singer-songwriter Kimo Nevius will be showcasing his songs—new and old—in a series of shows at Moana Bakery and Café in Pa‘ia.

Kimo writes and plays a unique brand of folk music steeped in Hawaiian history and culture. Many of his songs deal with Maui in the nineteenth century—a time of whaling ships, sugar plantation, and cowboys, and his songs narrate stories of everyone from commoners to kings. When he’s not writing about Maui, his work still has a tendency to focus on the past—from the warm glow of nostalgia to remembering the feeling of first love.

Each show in September will be on a different theme: one night will be love songs, one night will focus on Hawaii, one will be about remembering the past—and one will be full of surprises.

Kimo performs 7–9pm each Saturday in September (that's Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24) at Moana Bakery and Café, located at 71 Baldwin Ave. in Pa‘ia (just mauka of the public parking lot).

How easy is it to support Na Mele O Maui? It's as easy as (pizza) pie! (Aug. 30 at Flatbread Co., Paia)

IT'S AS EASY AS (PIZZA) PIE!
(Tuesday) August 30, 5-10pm, Flatbread Company, 89 Hana Hwy., Paia (808-579-8989)

It's good to 'give back.' But it's fun to give back by doing something you'd be doing anyway. Like eating. Everybody's gotta eat! So when you're choosing where and what to grind next week, consider Flatbread Company on Tuesday night (August 30). Why? Between the hours of 5-10pm, they're donating $3.50 for every large flatbread sold (or $1.75 for every small) to Na Mele O Maui, in support of the upcoming 39th annual Nā Mele O Maui Song & Art Contest.

PS: Have you seen Flatbread Company's updated website? Chee hoo, it's pretty sweet. Check out da Paia locale's page (where we swiped the image used in this blog): http://www.flatbreadcompany.com/FlatbreadMaui2010.html
