Roller Derby Exhibition
5 pm Central Maui Boys and Girls Club basketball courts, Kanaloa Ave.
FREE - FAMILY FRIENDLY - NO SMOKING/DRINKING
Bring a picnic, bring the kids, and come have some fun! Have you ever seen roller derby played? It's fast and furious, lots of contact and some confusion - and the Maui Rollergirls want to give you the inside scoop so you know what the heck you're cheering for. The Maui Rollergirls are scrimmaging tonight at 5pm on the basketball courts behind the Central Maui Boys and Girls Club - and the public is invited to this free, family friendly event. Instead of the usual 1 hour bout, they will have shorter exhibition jams - taking the time to stop and take questions, explain the plays and the strategy behind them, and demonstrate why Maui's roller derby team remains undefeated. Meet the team, buy a shirt with the infamous "slippah skate" logo, talk to us about sponsorship opportunities for this new non-profit, and support a group of women that are traveling around the country to compete, and also bringing tremendous derby talent here to Maui. Roller Derby is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is experiencing what some might call a renaissance, but we call it a revolution. Please feel free to forward this message :)

Alika Nako'okaSaturday (June 4), 7-10pm, Mulligan's on the Blue, Wailea Everybody loves Alika. Born on the island of Maui, he hails from a musical pedigree that includes popular Hawaiian entertainers like his father, Alika Nako'oka Sr., and his uncles, Willie "Smiley" Nako'oka and Jesse Nako'oka (who's famous for his long-running lu'au show at the Maui Lu, as well as a string of hits including "54 Bridges to Hana Town"). Alika began singing at an early age, performing throughout the Hawaiian Islands and Pacific Northwest, and later in his career toured Los Angeles, Seattle and (of course) Las Vegas. Learn more about Alika by visiting his website, http://www.alikanakooka.com and be sure to catch his gig this Saturday (June) for at Mulligan's on the Blue. 100 Kaukahi St., Wailea; 808-874-1131
Saturday (June 4), Haui's Life's A Beach, Kihei, free
Oahu's own HiRiZ--featuring Maui-raised lead singer and guitarist Ka'imi Hanano'eau---bring their unique rock steady style to the South side, this Saturday (June 4). Best of all, there's no cover for the concert. Yep. The best things in life are free! [1913 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei; 808-891-8010; http://www.mauibars.com / http://www.hirizmusic.com]ABOUT THE BAND (read more at http://www.hirizmusic.com):
Hiriz started at Easy Music Center where Ka’imi and Steve worked. They talked about starting a band not knowing what would become of it. Steve knew a drummer and a rhythm guitarist. The first couple of practices were rough but it soon started to take shape. By that time, they did not have a band name. Practices took place in Papakolea over looking downtown Honolulu. Shannon came up with the name “high rise” but the others took it to the next level. Thus, HiRiZ was born.
HiRiZ has built up their original and cover material to with stand a five hour gig. With the island reggae and rock fusion technicality, HiRiZ has a distinct sound. Not limiting their horizons, they also like to mesh the reggae vibe with genres such as Bossa Nova, Jazz, Alternative, R&B, and Funk.
ABOUT MAUI BOY KA'IMI HANANO'EAU (read more at http://www.hirizmusic.com):
Born on O’ahu and raised in Maui, he started playing Ukulele at the age of 5. By freshman year at H.P. Baldwin High School he was already affiliated with a Halau/Production company at the age of 14 . It was his first job and only job in his high school years. How fortunate of him to have a regular income as a professional musician until graduation. When he graduated, he could play ukulele, bass, guitar, piano and Tahitian percussion. He then moved back to O’ahu to attended BYUH in La’ie where he graduated with a B.A. in Music (Major) and Hawaiian Studies (Minor) furthering his knowledge with music theory and live sound engineering. He now works as a Sales Associate at Easy Music Center Pearl City where he specializes in ukulele and live sound equipment. Ka`imi has experience with all aspects of music ranging from behind the stage as a sound technician to on stage as the main act. His current instrument of choice is the guitar. He alone has enough material for a three-hour solo gig but jamming with HiRiZ is his new passion.
